LECTURE: Odilon Redon

source
During today's class, we got a lecture about Odilon Redon.

He was a French artist who at the beginning created only monochrome works, only in later years of his life did he begin to introduce colour using the oils or pastels. His characteristic element is placing people's faces or body parts in the landscapes or still lifes.

During the lecture, we went through a bunch of his artworks. Personally, this is not the type of art that delights or inspires me. Most of his works seem to be weird and nostalgic. Although, I like how he mixes the colours, especially, when creating the sky or water. They make the recipient focus on a specific element and at the same time introduce a specific mood.

Odilon Redon (1867) Self Portrait
My favourite artwork of Redon is his self-portrait as it is realistic and with the true colour and shape of the face. He perfectly emphasised the face contour and added the shadows. I also like the technique of dashes he used to create the structure of the coat he's wearing.

  1. Good commentary here - although I do feel sorry for Redon who just made a 'bunch' of artworks! But fair opinion well done
