REFLECTION ON TERM 3

I can honestly say that the 3rd term was my favourite one. I have been working on tens of posts. Starting from research, going through class tasks, reaching the final project process and website update.

This term, we have had a chance to fully delve into our progression routes and final projects. Comparing to the previous terms, we have done a lot more in terms of future studies. And I think that was the best part of this term. I really enjoyed the class tasks, especially the one about fashion illustrations. The primary and secondary research tasks gave me a great idea about places I could take photos in. And the ice breaker - self-portrait - was one of the funniest things I have ever done. I cannot say that putting my face in the plaster and filling the shape with jelly was something I have done before. Therefore, what is not done for the sake of art?

For the final project, I set the bar very high for myself. Except for the brainstorming, planning and developing class exercises, I had to do a lot more. The project was a combination of traditional and digital techniques. It required drawing, photographing, posing, draping, sewing and many more skills. The plan I have made was super specific to be able to finish everything on time. Despite the finals at my high school, which cut out two weeks from my university life, I managed to polish every aspect of my project.

The 2D part consisted of 4 designs. I developed my traditional drawing techniques. Firstly by drawing the models, templates to later work on and then making the final designs. The crucial part for me was to show the volume of the dresses. It has always been a problem for me, but this time I focused more on the shadows and achieved the wanted effect. To polish the designs and showcase them in the final portfolio, I used digital software. Thankfully, I have not had any serious problems with it, but this part was very time-consuming. However, it definitely doesn't compare with the process of making and displaying the 3D piece.

The 3D part was a venture, and I am not even lying. The whole process consisted of a basic plan, making a list of materials, fabrics and tools, buying all of them, making a pattern and construction, studying making a corset using youtube tutorials, cutting out the pieces, sewing them together, finishing the edges, polishing the details, trying on, making improvements, looking for the photoshoot places, getting ready for the photoshoot, organising the photoshoot, choosing the photos, editing the photos and displaying everything in the final portfolio. I know, sounds tough, and it really was. Only the process of making the 3D piece took me more than a week. It is better not to talk about all the rest because the numbers only keep increasing.

Notwithstanding that, this project, especially the 3D part, was the best work I have done. I have fully stepped out of my comfort zone, tested my possibilities and discovered new skills. I have never done such a time-consuming, extraordinary and ambitious project in my entire life. I am super proud of myself.

The final piece turned out even better than I expected. I was sure about making crucial mistakes so that something would not work. Obviously, there is a lot that could be improved, but I am not a professional tailor or fashion designer and I have done my best. The only thing that did not really work were the lights. My phone and even my camera decided not to work, so, unfortunately, I had to get rid of this idea.

Even without the lights, the 3D piece made an amazing impression on my family, friends, classmates and even teachers. It's been a long time since I received such positive feedback on my work. And I must admit that it additionally motivates me to act.

For me, this was such a fun project. I have finally had a chance to do what I really love. Except for the designing and sewing part, I could do my make up, pose, take pictures and spend some time in the fresh air surrounded by beautiful architecture in my home town.

After this term and this project, I am definitely ready to start the BA course at the university. I am much more aware of what is expected from me and how I should plan my work. I am also much more confident with what I am doing. I started to like trying new techniques and making things I would never think about. The whole experience changed me as a person and as an artist. I am really thankful for this year and I will never forget it.

I would also like to thank my tutors for teaching me new skills, offering good advice and helping in unusual circumstances. That was a pleasure.
